A warm and friendly home-away-from-home, we are located only 5 minutes walking distance from Clifden town centre, so you can just park your car and easily walk to town.
Our home is non-smoking and we have some ground floor rooms. All rooms are en suite with every modern convenience, and we offer complimentary Wi-Fi internet access and computer for your use. Our extensive breakfast menu features each item freshly cooked to order, as well as complimentary tea and coffee facilities. We breed Connemara ponies and sheep. You are welcome to visit them on our land nearby during your stay. If possible, we will accompany you and you can also meet Toby, our sheep dog, and Harley, our golden retriever, if you wish. The real turf fires and original works of art, coupled with our local knowledge and information ensure return visits.
Hotel information
The guest lounge is most comfortable, with complimentary tea and coffee facilities, lots of local information, board games and books. You can even peruse through the guest comment books since 1997.
The front garden slopes down to the road (steps provided!). There are landscaped beds and a pond. The rear garden extends up to the base of the hill where there are beds of herbs and vegetables. The hens reside here from May to September, even providing some of the eggs for breakfast, and Diana, our small Connemara pony, visits from time to time.

Complimentary tea and coffee and home-baking are served by the turf fire in the guest lounge on arrival.
The breakfast room is spacious, with individual tables. You can help yourself to a large buffet before ordering your beverages and main breakfast.
The buffet includes juices, yoghurts, cold meats, cheeses, cereals, fresh fruits, and prepared fruits, as well as fresh home-baking and home-made breads. You can also order the hot beverage of your choice from a large selection, served with toast, home-made marmalade and preserves. Then choose from the many choices of freshly cooked breakfast, featuring traditional Irish breakfast, home-made pancakes, smoked salmon, buttermilk porridge and daily specials.
Area information
The selection of restaurants, pubs, shops and galleries nearby makes this the ideal base for your holiday in Connemara. Connemara is the area of County Galway west of Lough Corrib, and it is an area of outstanding beauty. There are numerous sandy beaches, golfing at Ballyconneely, fishing in the famous lakes and rivers, and spectacular hill walking in the mountains. You can also enjoy cycling, bird-watching, scuba-diving, sea-cruises, heritage tours, garden tours, deep sea fishing and pony trekking. It is a place to unwind, de-stress, relax and breathe in the fresh, clean air.
Travel information
By Car (from Galway):
- From Galway, take the N59 to Clifden.
- As you enter Clifden, there are 2 Esso petrol stations, turn right at the 2nd one.
- Buttermilk Lodge is about 400 metres further on up this road, on the left-hand side.
By Car (from Westport):
- From Westport, take the N59 to Clifden.
- Buttermilk Lodge is on the right-hand side just as you arrive in town, immediately after the 50 kph speed limit sign.
